Program Mission Statement: 

The entire Mission Statement of the department is found at http://nosferatu.cas.usf.edu/languages.mission.htm In particular we “engage in the study of human language . . . to provide both a humanistic and scientific perspective on this most distinguishing of human abilities . . . . to foster an increase in international and diverse cultural and aesthetic awareness, and to provide opportunities for the enhancement of practical communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries . . . to provide foreign language instruction at all levels . . . in support of the internationalization of the curriculum and international and multicultural education. . . . to conduct and encourage research, scholarship and creative work in ancient and modern language and literature . . .” The CAS Mission Statement may be found at the following web site: http://catalog.grad.usf.edu/currentpdf/USF_Graduate_Catalog_2005_2006_section12.pdf A major goal of the College of Arts and Sciences is to prepare students to understand and interact with other cultures. “The faculty of the Arts and Sciences strive to instill in their students a history of human ideas, a love of learning, and an understanding of the means that scholars have used in their search for beauty and order . . . ” 

 

Graduates of this program will be able to demonstrate the following:

OUTCOME 1:
  • Demonstrate competence in critical analysis of French and Francophone literature and culture.
  • Demonstrate mastery of the basic structures of the written language at the Advanced Plus level as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
  • Demonstrate oral proficiency in French at the Advanced level as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
Methods of Assessment :
  • Through a variety of mechanisms, including examinations, papers and speech samples, the French faculty of the WLE will measure students’ achievement of the identified core learning outcomes. The results of the assessments will be used to improve student achievement and program effectiveness.
  
OUTCOME 1:
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and analytical abilities, including the capacity to engage in inductive and deductive thinking and to construct sound arguments.
Methods of Assessment :
  • Through a variety of mechanisms, including examinations, papers and speech samples, the French faculty of the WLE will measure students’ achievement of the identified core learning outcomes. The results of the assessments will be used to improve student achievement and program effectiveness.
  
OUTCOME 1:
  • Contribute effectively to group discussions in French.
  • Develop effective written presentations in French.
  • Create and deliver effective oral presentations in French.
