Program Mission Statement: 

The Department of English at the University of South Florida is a community of teacher-scholars and writers whose mission is to promote learning in language, composition, literature, critical theory, pedagogy, and professional, technical, and creative writing. The Department at both the undergraduate and graduate levels promotes the development of life-long skills in language, critical thinking, reading, writing, and research; embraces intellectual and human diversity; and fosters comparative and interdisciplinary approaches. 

 

Graduates of this program will be able to demonstrate the following:
OUTCOME 1:
  • Ability to communicate technical information orally and in writing through the appropriate use of media

  • Ability to design, interpret, and argue with visual texts

OUTCOME 3:
  • Ability to use communication technologies to research and produce text

  • Print and online deliverables in ENC 2210, ENC 3250, and/or ENC 4260
  
OUTCOME 4:
  • Ability to deploy strategies for managing writing projects
Methods of Assessment :
  • Print and online deliverable in ENC 2210, ENC 3250, and/or ENC 4260
  
OUTCOME 5:
  • Proficiency in computer use
Methods of Assessment :
  • Test of Proficiency on word-processing test: (1) Students will have basic command of a word-processing software package; (2) Students will have the ability to convert user knowledge from one software package to another. PASS or FAIL will be determined by rubric designed by the Instructor of the course.
  
OUTCOME 6:
  • Sufficient competency for obtaining internships and/or gainful employment in the field

  • Alumni survey and Exit Interviews conducted by Coordinator of program
  
OUTCOME 1:
  • Ability to perform thorough, critical, and efficient research in preparing their written projects

  • Ability to analyze contexts and audiences to determine how they influence communication

  • Written deliverables in ENC 4260 and ENC 4311-(Advanced Composition)
  
OUTCOME 3:
  • Ability to use research methods to produce technical documents
Methods of Assessment :
  • Students will be able to design surveys, questionnaires, and interview questions
  
OUTCOME 4:
  • Ability to analyze literature in its cultural and historical context
Methods of Assessment :
  • The course titles and descriptions reflect the inherent importance of the historical/cultural context of the works studied. Faculty teaching these courses assess student achievement of these goals by including in their classes several written assignments that address this aspect of literature. These assignments are evaluated, graded, and returned to the students, whose final grades assess and reflect their level of achievement.

  • Ability to persuasively integrate the components of the writing process - planning, researching, drafting, designing, revising, and editing - to respond to technical situations and audiences

  • Written deliverables (final reports)in ENC 3250, ENC 4260, and ENC 4311 (Advanced Composition)
  
OUTCOME 2:
  • Ability to develop strategies for using various communication technologies to produce technical documents

  • Written deliverables (Portfolios or final reports) in ENC 2210, ENC 3250,ENC 4906, and/or ENC 4260
  
OUTCOME 3:
  • Ability to offer and to accept constructive feedback on technical/professional documents
Methods of Assessment :
  • Peer review workshops
  
OUTCOME 4:
  • Ability to communicate technical/professional data to an audience, using oral and computer presentatio skills
Methods of Assessment :
  • Oral presentations, PowerPoint Presentations
  
OUTCOME 5:
  • Ability to work in collaboration with other writers in production of documents
Methods of Assessment :
  • Peer reviews, self-evaluation, instructor evaluation based on pre-designed rubric
