Program Mission Statement:
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication prepares students: (i) to communicate effectively and ethically in relational settings (personal, organizational, institutional, and global); (ii) to evaluate mediated messages (news, information, marketing, politics, and entertainment); (iii) to compose and perform effective communication texts (written, oral, and aesthetic); and (iv) to advocate the values and practices of democratic citizenship in a rapidly changing world.

OUTCOME
1: |
- BA students will identify and articulate major concepts in human communication, including relationality, culture, dialogue, community, persuasion, ritual, race, social construction, family, and identity.

Methods of Assessment
:
|
- Students enrolled in COM 2000, Introduction to Communication, will complete a Blackboard administered, on-line, ungraded, pre-test covering the above communication concepts. At the end of the semester, these same students will complete a Blackboard administered, on-line, ungraded post-test on communication concepts.
- Students enrolled in upper-division Communication courses, including Women and Communication; Community, Culture, and Communication; and Diversity and Communication, will present Final Projects. Faculty will assess final projects with Final Project Rubric, evaluating on a three-point scale (unsatisfactory, satisfactory, and excellent) students' abilities to identify and articulate major concepts in human communication.

- BA students will analyze the role of communication in the development and maintenance of personal relationships and apply this analysis in family, health, and organizational contexts.

Methods of Assessment
:
|
- Across all sections of Interpersonal Communication, students will submit end-of-semester Portfolios of their course work. Five Portfolios will be selected at random from each section. A jury of three faculty will evaluate Portfolios utilizing the Interpersonal Relations Portfolio Rubric, assessing student analysis and application of commmunication in personal relationships on a 4-point scale of poor, satisfactory, excellent, and outstanding.
- Students in advanced Communication classes, inclduing Family, Health, and Organizational Communication courses, will complete and submit the Interpersonal Relations Self-Assessment, rating their understanding of analysis and application on a 7-point scale from poor to excellent.

- BA students will analyze and evaluate mediated messages for their persuasive, cultural, and ethical impacts.

Methods of Assessment
:
|
- Students enrolled in sections of Persuasion will complete a Case Study of a mediated text at the end of the semester. Five case studies will be chosen at random across the sections, totaling 25 case studies. A jury of three faculty will evaluate these case studies according to the Case Study Rubric, a 4-point scale of poor, satisfactory, excellent, and outstanding.
- Students enrolled in Introduction to Culture and Media will complete a Blackboard administered, on-line, ungraded, 10-item Critical Thinking about Mediated Messages pre-test. At the end of the semester, these same students will complete this same exam as a post-test.

- BA students will demonstrate effective oral presentation skills, including shaping a message, adapting to audience and situation, using language that clarifies, persuades, or inspires; and managing or overcoming communication anxiety.

Methods of Assessment
:
|
- Students enrolled in Introduction to Communication as Performance will complete a Blackboard administered, on-line, ungraded Oral Presentation Skills Self-Assessment. At the end of the semester, these same students will complete the same Self-Assessment.
- Students enrolled in advanced Communication classes will make end of semester Presentations. Faculty will evaluate effective oral presentation skills using the Oral Presentation Skills Rubric.

- BA students will demonstrate appropriate and effective career communication skills, including resume writing, interviewing, and business correspondence.

Methods of Assessment
:
|
- All students in Interview Communication will submit a resume and cover letter. Faculty will evaluate appropriate and effective writing according to the Resume Evaluation Rubric.
- All students in Interview Communication will conduct an information interview with an approved individual in an organization. Students' interview skills will be evaluated by the interviewee, using a 6-point scale from poor to excellent. These evaluation forms aree returned via mail or fax to the Professor of the course.
