How and when did you first become interested in your field of study?

Since I have entered the special mathematical school No.2 in Moscow, Russia in 1969.

What made you decide to pursue a career in higher education?

I have always wanted to be a Professor of Mathematics, so the choice was relatively easy. It did help that my father, S. Ya. Khavinson, was also a well known Russian mathematician who stimulated my interest in mathematics.

Why did you choose to be a part of the academic community at USF?

There is a strong Analysis group here and both my wife, Catherine Beneteau, who is also a mathematician, and I felt very welcome here.

What do you enjoy about teaching the students of USF?

The students here seem to be stronger and more mature than at other state universities where I taught. Part of it is probably that this is a large urban university, and students do have a clear idea what they want to study and which goals they want to achieve when they come here.

What do you like about the university community?

It is the most intellectually stimulating environment I can imagine, I always wanted this kind of life and I love it.
