The Florida Board of Governors adopted a Strategic Plan for the State University System of Florida on June 19, 2005. This plan addresses major goals related to providing access, meeting the workforce needs of the state, and building world-class academic programs and research capacity.
In January 2006, the Florida Council of 100 released a report entitled: Preparing for the Future. Eight drivers were identified to continuously improve the economic well-being and quality of life of the people of Florida. The drivers included: Education; Income, jobs, and business climate; Growth management and environment; Hurricane readiness and cost; Attainable housing; Rising health care costs; Energy dependence and affordability; and Globalization.
Roadmap to Florida's Future is Florida's strategic plan for economic development. It was prepared by Enterprise Florida, Inc. (EFI), a public-private partnership responsible for leading Florida's statewide economic development efforts.
U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings proposed five steps that she said would make American colleges more accessible, more affordable, and more accountable. View the press release with a link to the report.
TARU measures include: total research and development expenditures; federally sponsored research and development expenditures; the number of members of the National Academies among an institution's faculty; the number of significant faculty awards earned as indicators of faculty distinction; the number of doctorates awarded; the number of postdoctoral appointments supported; the median SAT scores as indicators of student competitiveness; endowment size ; and annual giving.
The research index is based on the following correlates of research activity: research & development (R&D) expenditures in science and engineering (S&E); R&D expenditures in non-S&E fields; S&E research staff (postdoctoral appointees and other non-faculty research staff with doctorates); doctoral conferrals in humanities fields, in social science fields, in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, and in professional fields (e.g., business, education, public policy, social work).
